 - In California - 

Ceramic Window Tinting laws in California are regulated by the California Vehicle Code (CVC) 


  1. Front Side Windows and Windshield - The maximum allowable tint darkness (called VLT) for front side windows and the windshield is 70% - You can apply non-reflective tint on the top 4 inches of the windshield.

  2. Rear Side Windows and Rear Window - The maximum allowable tint darkness for rear side windows and the rear window is 40%. 

  3. Front Windshield Tint - Tinting the front windshield is only allowed on the top 4 to 5 inches (known as the AS-1 line). - This top strip must be transparent, with no opaque lettering or visibility distortion. - The material's lower edge should be at least 29 inches above the undepressed driver's seat.

  4. Side Mirrors - If your rear window is tinted, you must have exterior rear-view mirrors on each side of the vehicle. 

  5. Restricted Tint Colors - Red or amber-colored tint film is prohibited on the front windshield. - Other colors are allowed for the windshield top strip (AS-1 line), but no color-altering Tint is - permitted on other windows
